Impact rings for accurate bearing fitting

An impact ring spreads the force of a hammer blow evenly over the ring of a bearing, so the balls or rollers never have to carry that force. Striking a bearing directly damages the raceways, even when nothing shows on the outside. The damage surfaces later as noise, vibration and early failure. The ring is the difference between a fitting that reaches its service life and one that cuts it short.

Use is straightforward. Choose the ring whose face bears on the bearing ring you are fitting: mounting onto a shaft, the force goes through the inner ring, and mounting into a housing, through the outer ring. Strike short and square until the bearing sits against its shoulder, and never at an angle, because the bearing then tilts in the fit and scores the seat.

Make sure the size matches the bore and the outside diameter of the bearing. A complete set covers a run of sizes and stops you improvising with a piece of pipe the moment an odd size comes up. The rest of the tooling for assembly and disassembly follows on directly from this.
